Deep within Montrose lies a hidden gem of a bar pleasantly named The Fat Dog. Situated in between a sushi restaurant and a gift store, The Fat Dog’s exterior offers a humble décor with a doggie water bowl, presumably in reference to the name of the bar. As you enter, one can immediately feel a classy gastropub vibe. To your left are comfortable booths with tables for larger groups; to the right is a string of stools by the bar. The atmosphere is a welcoming crowd of youthful, down-to-earth locals who simply want to unwind after a long day and hang out with friends.
As you sit down, they offer free rosemary almonds that add a little more flair to their ambience. People can be spotted ordering sides of sweet potato fries or onion rings with a glass of Stella Artois for $5 each (or $3 during their happy hour). For a hungrier appetite, they offer gourmet paninis or even a scrumptious jalapeno mac and cheese with bacon. Ranging anywhere from $8- $16, The Fat Dog’s entrée menu redefines the term “bar food,” complementing their vast array of drink choices.
Whether you are a beer, wine or hard liquor type of person, The Fat Dog supplies a variety for those who are thirsty. A local favorite cocktail is the Sneaky Dick Willie- a drink that one should try simply for the name alone. Another favorite is the French Bulldog Kiss and the Key Lime “Pug.” Do not let the cute dog names fool you- these drinksdefinitely have a punch to it. Also, remember to be sweet to your waitress as they have been known to offer free shots to their loyal customers.
Open from Mondays through Saturdays, The Fat Dog has a great selection of discounted food and drinks during their 4-6PM happy hour. Next time you are looking for a new local bar to enjoy or merely passing through the back neighborhoods of Montrose, do not hesitate to visit The Fat Dog. It will be an experience you would want to repeat.
